ARE THEY STILL WATCHING?

Just when it was thought that the content of TV programmes had reached a level where it was impossible to breach a consistent falling moral and ethical acceptance the plateau of depravity will on Friday 1st of June sink to a new level. It is perhaps repulsive to most just how low moral fortitude can be eroded in order to ensure a pre-wired audience for a TV show but the company that brought Big Brother to TV screens around the world has, in a pre-emptive publicity wave against failure sunk to a new level of Moro ethical depravity that is new ground even for them.

The formula for success requires a 37 year-old woman who is terminally ill and dying of cancer. Three desperate contestants who must be young and all on dialysis
and all in need of a transplanted kidney who are prepared to do almost anything to get one. A TV station that is willing to screen the program, which in this case will be BNN in Holland. A suitably engrossed audience each of which has a mobile phone with which they can send text messages advising the terminally ill woman who she should bequeath her kidneys to after her death. A final requirement for success is a “Just cause” for the makers of this outrage to hide behind in order to justify the making and screening of a program that could not be put before an audience for their delectation anywhere else in the world. The “Just cause” is claimed to be the lack of kidney donors in Holland and the cited martyr of the cause is the founder of the TV company Bart De Graaf who died five years ago after undergoing several unsuccessful kidney transplant operations, which in the cold light of day does not lend credence to any possibility of a satisfactory outcome. The company making the programme is of course Endemol who became embroiled in the charges of “Racist Abuse” against Shilpa Sheti and more recently in a similar programme in Australia were accused of withholding news of a father’s death from Cancer from his daughter who was in the “Big Brother House”. Naturally the “Stage managed” versions for public consumption on Endemol’s failings was given the correct “Spin” to retain company integrity.
The 52 year old owner of Endemol, John De Mol who made the original Big Brother show and then sold Endemol in 2000 only to buy it back is said to have  “Thought of the idea” behind the Kidney Donor show and has “even more “Bizarre ideas” in the planning stage. The world can only wait with impending revulsion to acquaint itself with ever more sensationally distasteful TV programmes designed to pull viewers away from mainstream entertainment. That is the regrettable point, the world has reached a depravity that will watch a dying woman wield the power of life or death over three people staring death in the face egged on by voyeuristic audiences encouraged to vote or not by text upon the death or survival of victims they can see alive, to call it entertainment invalidates an industry that has done too much good to be disregarded.
Whatever the motives are for The Kidney Donor show several things are glaringly obvious, at the end of the day there are kidneys for sale and it will not be the donor that benefits. Though the donor may have two kidneys that could save two of the three intended recipients the programme has made it clear that only one will receive the organs because it cites the victims chances as 33 to 1 and claims that it is better odds than they would normally have. No, the objective is clearly fiscal and the only beneficiary will be Endemol.

The Dutch parliament are to debate the programme before it is transmitted and though the programme is dressed in the clothes of claimed respectability the point is to make money from organ donation a practise reviled and outlawed in many countries.

On the streets of San Palo, in the ghetto’s of Asia and in the vast expanse of Africa it is possible to secure human organs for cash from healthy donors so desperate to keep their families or themselves from starving to death, there are illegal markets in such commodities and surgeons willing to carry out the procedures, sometimes the donors survive sometimes they do not but the difference between this illegal trade and Endemol’s brand of “Entertainment” is that no one is watching and the desperation of its victims ensures its clandestine existence which is why it flourishes.
