What are we supposed to want?

For years I thought that all women wanted and should want was a man by their side and a few little ones running around them...but now I'm not so sure.  When did we stop wanting the simple and start expecting more? And for that matter when did men cotton on and change their rules aswell... from somewhere power was introduced and it's holder keeps shifting.  At what point do you begin to want more than just a settlement and a family?
