The "War" in Iraq
Today I read an article about a Republican governor, Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, that compared the war in Iraq to Vietnam. Naturally it was met with opposition from our president's minions. My question is this: Why? Why are there people blindly supporting this war? Why are people allowing for history to repeat itself? I think the people are allowing their religious standpoints and bias to blur their vision. Subconsciously, they are allowing their distrust for other religions to take over and are now supporting what is essentially a war crime. To declare war on terrorism is, in effect, impossible. There are terror cells in every nation across the globe. When Timothy McVeigh bombed the Federal Building in Oklahoma did the federal government declare war on Indiana? Of course not. They allowed there branch, the FBI, to solve the case. So, when the terrorists flew two planes into the World Trade Center, that case file should have immediately landed on the desk of the CIA. The U.S. Military, once considered the greatest in the world, should never have gotten involved because there was no specific nation of terrorists. If anything, the U.N. should have allowed for their militant wing to take police action. However, since the U.N. did not vote in favor of a move on Afghanistan, the U.S. should have backed down and sought cooperation with the Afghan government. Now, we have exposed the ineffectiveness of the U.N. by stepping outside of their jurisdiction and taking matters into our own hands. Now when a crisis arises such as the one in Russia with the school hostages, we have no right to chastise the Russian government for taking action without U.N. consent. Now we are draining our military resources on fighting coalitions in a conflict that supposedly ended a year ago. Not only that, but these coalitions are in an area where we did not originally suspect Al-Queda to be. So we developed and excuse for going over there (weapons of mass destruction) and now we have stumble around and develop reasons to not leave. Vietnamization: "In the spring of 1969 President Richard M. Nixon initiated his new policy of 'Vietnamization.' Vietnamization had two distinct elements: first, the unilateral withdraw of American troops from South Vietnam; and, second, the assumption of greater military responsibilities by the South Vietnamese armed forces to make up for that loss." (www.studyworld.com). Sound familiar? Iraqinazation is the exact same thing. We all agree that Vietnam was a bad idea so why cant we see the similarities? Now, innocent people are being branded with stereotypes and treated unfairly because of their ethnicity. People of Middle Eastern descent are now being labeled as Muslim terrorists and are now the 1960's black man of today. We all agree that brandishing the blacks with stereotypes is wrong so why is it right to do the same to the Middle Easterners? Its not. I say stop the war and stop the hate.
