Saab 9-3 Turbo X Sport Combi: Design/Fit and Finish

Although its materials aren't bad, the 9-3's cabin quality is far from worthy of its inflated sticker. Perhaps at $36,000 we wouldn't be complaining, given the Turbo X's performance capabilities and utility. But at $46,000, it had better be as nice or nicer than its competitors from Infiniti and BMW. It isn't.

Chevrolet Cobalt XFE

Desperation isn't pretty, especially not the kind of desperation you feel when your tank is running on fumes and there's no filling station in sight. You do what you can to limp the car to the next fuel stop, and inevitably, thoughts like "Why didn't I think of this earlier?" haunt you. Perhaps it's this sort of situation that led GM to develop the 2009 Chevy Cobalt XFE. After a long period of placing fuel-efficiency low on its priorities, Chevy finds itself in a pinch. Lacking a readily available vehicle to challenge hybrid stalwarts like the Toyota Prius and Honda Civic Hybrid, it needed something to offer the fuel-conscious driver. However, the XFE (for eXtra Fuel Economy) has become more of a Band-Aid approach rather than a reputable high-mileage contender.

Saab 9-3 Turbo X Sport Combi: Performance

But as is so indicative of this car, a high point is immediately followed by a low point. The EPA estimates fuel economy for the 2008 Saab 9-3 Aero and 9-3 Turbo X to be 15 mpg city/24 mpg highway and 18 mpg combined: numbers we managed to duplicate. By comparison, the BMW 328xi is about as quick as the Turbo X and gets 2 mpg better, while the much quicker Infiniti EX35 rates about 1 mpg better. In other words, not exactly awful, but still disappointing given the Sport Combi's compact size and so-so acceleration.

Camry 2.0 — Less Fuel, More Power

It's a question that 2008 Toyota Camry Hybrid drivers are bound to hear — and frankly, it's one we initially struggled with ourselves. After all, the Prius gets 12 more combined miles per gallon (46 versus 34) according to the EPA, and it boasts a more versatile hatchback layout while offering comparable passenger room. Its base price is also about $3,000 lower. And hey, [insert your favorite celebrity's name here] drives one.
