Inside, the spartan cabin is, for the most part, straightforward. Switchgear is where you'd expect it to be, while the climate controls are a no-brainer. Our test truck's MyGig navigation and audio system was a different story, as it features a smallish screen with frustrating menus — particularly for satellite radio. The "UConnect" Bluetooth connection worked well and was easy to program, although it lacked the typical steering wheel controls.

With all that said, the 2008 Mercedes-Benz E550 has an affable nature that should please most luxury sedan intenders. It has the firm, reassuring feel that's the hallmark of a premium Euro-bred sedan, and a plush ride quality, as bumps and ruts are absorbed without any excess body motions. Wind noise is virtually nonexistent, as is road noise, except when running over grooved concrete freeways (common in Southern California), where the latter is noticeable but not intrusive.

The 2008 Toyota RAV4 represents the third year of this generation, and also shows how much this former "cute ute" has grown up. Sized closely to some midsizers, the RAV4 offers an optional third-row seat and the best engine in the segment. That rearmost seat is pretty cramped and best appreciated by little kids, but it's a rarity in this segment and better than the rickety lawn-chair affair in the rival Mitsubishi Outlander.
